Embrace Your Awkwardness: How Being Yourself Makes the World a Better Place

It's time to reframe that "I'm too awkward" thought and embrace it!

As a personal brand photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing numerous entrepreneurs through personality-packed marketing images. Along the way, I've learned that embracing our true selves, including our quirks, not only enhances personal growth but also positively impacts the world. In this blog post, we'll explore the power of authenticity in photography and how being yourself can make a difference. Let's dive in!

Embracing Your Authentic Self

Authenticity is the key to building a strong personal brand. When you are genuine and true to yourself, people are naturally drawn to your story, allowing your uniqueness to shine and distinguish you from the crowd. Don't hesitate to showcase your true personality in your brand photography; it connects you with your audience on a deeper level in a way that will keep you top of mind!

The Beauty of "Imperfections" (shall we just call them differences instead?)

Our differences are what make us human. Embracing (what you think are your) "flaws" and showcasing (what you think are) "quirks" in your brand photography can be incredibly powerful. And to be clear, you're the only one who thinks those things are flaws.

Sharing that journey of acceptance demonstrates vulnerability and relatability, enabling your audience to see the real you. As Brené Brown said, "Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen."

Finding Confidence in Being Unapologetically You

Being yourself means being comfortable in your own skin, even if it means being a little "awkward" at times (EVERYONE tells me they're awkward on camera). Instead of pursuing a picture-perfect image, focus on capturing your genuine expressions and emotions. Remember, the goal is to not just look good on camera but to also FEEL good. And the truth is, when we feel good, that tends to shine outward and helps us create those magnetic images that do that fabulous marketing and attraction work for us.

Practice your Photography Poses & Build a Unique Shotlist

When it comes to personal brand photography, the right poses can boost your confidence, which will in turn encourage you to show up more, forging lasting connections with the people who look to you. So ditch the stiff, rigid, stuffy poses that remind you of a law firm's team page circa 1994 and instead practice natural and relaxed postures that feel good and reflect your true self. Whether it's a candid laugh or an engaging conversation, these moments capture the essence of who you are. Experiment with different poses that make you feel comfortable and highlight your unique personality. Embrace your body, expressions, and style. After all, you are one-of-a-kind, and that's something worth celebrating.

Making sure your shotlist is filled with stories that set you apart is another way to pull to the surface your unique personality. Are you a baker, baton twirler, or badminton player in your free time? I promise there's a way to pull in those beautifully you moments in both subtle and obvious ways - your choice!

Making the World a Better Place

When you fully embrace who you are, it's like you're sending out this wave of inspiration to everyone around you. Seriously, your authenticity is contagious and each time we allow ourselves to share that vulnerable secret sauce, the fabric of society becomes woven with acceptance, understanding, and inclusivity. By just being yourself and owning your story, you ignite a powerful chain reaction that encourages others to let go of their masks and embrace their true selves too. It causes a ripple effect that can truly make a difference to those around us.

Imagine a world where everyone just rocked their authentic selves, with no judgments or pretending, where differences are celebrated and everyone feels valued for who they are...

It would be a freaking awesome place, right? Well, that's the beauty of embracing who you are. As more and more people have the guts to be real, the world becomes a more accepting and inclusive space for everyone. So, my friend, never ever underestimate the impact of being yourself. You have the power to make a genuine difference and shape a world where it's cool to just be who you are.

Embracing Vulnerability: Connecting on a Deeper Level

Vulnerability is often misunderstood as a weakness, but it is actually a strength that fosters deeper connections. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable in your images, you invite your audience to connect with the real you. Share stories, moments, and emotions that resonate with your journey. By opening up, you create a safe space for others to do the same, fostering a sense of belonging and authenticity. Remember, vulnerability is not about being perfect; it's about being genuine.

Overcoming the Fear of Judgment: Embracing Your Uniqueness

I get it. The fear of judgment can really hold us back from being ourselves. And in actuality, there will always be people out there who are judging us. Always. But here's the thing: embracing who you area and sharing it with the world is way more powerful than any judgment you might face.

Think about it like this: when you fully embrace your true self you exude confidence and attract people who appreciate and resonate with the real you. You become memorable. So don't let that fear of judgment stand in your way of continuing to show up authentically. Embrace your individuality and let your true colors shine. You'll be amazed at its positive impact on your life and the world around you.

Authenticity as a Catalyst for Success

In today's crowded marketplace, being real has become a powerful tool for success. People increasingly seek genuine connections and experiences. When you embody authenticity in your brand photography, you set yourself apart from any of the competition who haven't quite nailed this yet. Your audience recognizes and appreciates the honesty and integrity behind your brand, which fosters loyalty and trust.

Numerous studies have highlighted the impact of authenticity on consumer behavior. According to a report by Stackla, "88% of consumers stated that authenticity is a major deciding factor when it comes to choosing a brand to support." Additionally, a study conducted by Cohn & Wolfe revealed that "91% of consumers worldwide said they are willing to reward a brand for its authenticity by recommending it to others, and 62% said they would buy from a brand they perceive as authentic, even if it’s not the cheapest option."

These statistics reinforce the notion that being true to yourself in your brand photography can have a direct influence on your business's success.

Just be Yourself

Being yourself is not only liberating but also a catalyst for positive change. Embracing everything that sets you apart, including those "awkward" moments, allows you to connect with your audience on a deeper level. By celebrating your uniqueness, overcoming the fear of judgment, and embracing vulnerability, you not only enhance personal growth and fulfillment but also inspire others to do the same - how cool is that?!

Hi I'm Kayleigh - compassionate brand photographer & lover of green tea, travel, & all things plant-based

I live on the NW coast of England near Liverpool but I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and traveled for YEARS, shooting everything I saw in the 100+ countries I visited - deserts, icebergs, cliffs, fjords, you name it!

Then I started photographing people, which quickly turned into a passion. Over the years the more I got in front of the camera, the more I replaced past timidness with acceptance and self-love.

I've seen this shine through in my clients as well and it brings me so much joy helping other leaders around the world show up boldly and unapologetically to connect with their communities and grow their businesses.

And I absolutely love teaching other brand photographers how to hold the space for these shifts in their clients as well!
