Guiding Your Clients to a Shoot Rental Space Elevates Their Images AND Improves Your Portfolio

help your clients find photoshoot location rentals for their personal brand photoshoot

As you know, locations have a huge impact on elevating brand imagery. Many clients won't have any idea where they want to go at first, and that is ok. Once you've worked with them to create a shot list, mood board, and Google map, the locations start to find themselves!

Have your clients think about the following:

+ Where do they feel called to shoot?

+ What emotions and energy do they want to evoke in their images?

+ What locations are a part of their story/routine?

Most people stick close to where they live and work to capture things that represent where they are in the world, but that's not a requirement!

Whatever they choose needs to be in tune with their brand. Remind them that if they're a real estate agent, they don't want to confuse their clients with a gallery full of forest photos. And even if they are an outdoorsy brand, scroll down to see why I recommend at least starting at an indoor location.

how an indoor location can elevate a personal brand shoot & what to consider when shooting inside

Waking up in a bright Airbnb is the ultimate way for your client to kickstart a shoot day. It allows them to maximize their time with you (their photographer) and ensures that weather and crowds won't hold them back. A tidy, well-lit indoor space is beneficial for loads of reasons.

First of all, it provides a place for a make-up artist and/or hair stylist to meet your client and gives them a space to change outfits and freshen up. You, as the photographer, will also have way more control in a quiet space than out and about, so whether your client's own house is Instagram-able or they find one to rent, this will cover loads of lifestyle shots throughout the different spaces.

Weather can be an unpredictable pain no matter where in the world you are, so if there's a sudden downpour or you're faced with the harsh mid-day sun, a cute Airbnb provides the luxury of continuing to shoot rather than waiting for the weather to pass.

what to look for in an indoor shoot location

+ SPACE - it's important to have the space to capture wide shots for banner images and photos with lots of negative space + LIGHT - natural light is the most flattering and authentic, so big, beautiful windows are a must! It is also important to note which direction they face so you get ambient lighting that fills the room with softness rather than harsh rays of sun paired with dark shadows. + MINIMAL STYLING - you'll want your client to inject their mark on the space so it complements their brand. Have them search for a minimalistic, blank canvas to start so they can add pops of their brand colors through pillows, journals, mugs, etc. + WHITE WALLS & LIGHT FLOORING - to bounce that beautiful light!

renting a space

Renting an overnight space has HUGE benefits for you and your clients! Here are a few selling points for them:

  • the morning to get ready (makeup and hair stylists can come to them)

  • a clean, dry, relaxing start to the shoot

  • time to settle into the space and get in the zone

  • a private place to change outfits

  • separation between them and the daily chores and tasks of work/home

  • plenty of vignettes throughout the space for lifestyle shots (kitchen, sofa, bed, desk)

  • a mini work holiday to look forward to!

Plus, anything they spend money on during their branding shoot can be expensed, so have them keep that in mind as they search for their dream shoot locations!

Note that when booking a hotel* or airbnb, best practice is to go for 2 nights to avoid getting kicked out in the morning. However, since the sun sets so late in summer, you should have plenty of light after check-in to have the rental for one night - it just means you won't have the morning at the space to prep. It's a little more rushed but absolutely doable, especially if your client is on a bit of a budget!

There's also the option of booking space in a coworking building or even a studio by the hour, but remind your clients that everything takes longer than expected, so they'll want to book more hours than they think are needed.

*hotels are not a bad idea, but they can be a bit obvious in photos, from the basic decor and furnishings to the mounted headboard lights. If going for a hotel, find a big room with big windows.
