Brand shoot spotlight on Tarot Reader & Psychic, Kate Van Horn captured by Seattle Headshot Photographer.
This shoot almost didn't happen.
Kate and I connected through IG when she heard I was traveling back to my hometown in the Pacific Northwest and offering sessions as a Seattle headshot photographer. After a few emails and looking over my website she expressed that she had a very specific vision for the launch of a new program offer she was developing and her mood board was completely different to anything in my portfolio.
Rather than part ways and leave it at that,P I asked to see her pinterest board inspiration and wow was she correct! Her board was filled with fine art-inspired photography that broke so many photography rules. Rules that I have quite strictly adhered to for my brand shoot clients - crooked horizons, motion blur, shots out of focus, harsh shadows - these are things I generally work very hard to actively avoid during photoshoots!
So after some contemplation, I asked her if she wouldn't mind meeting me at a park and just playing for an hour while I capture some photos from her shot list to step outside my comfort zone, try something new, and add this unique style to my portfolio and she said yes!
So Kate met me at this gorgeous park outside of Seattle with a few outfits and a bag full of props and together we just played and enjoyed creating together. She pulled some tarot cards, ran, splashed, and danced as I shot more photos in an hour than I ever have before! And as much is it challenged me to willingly turn my shutter speed right down to the bottom, I really enjoyed capturing photos from a more artistic standpoint. It's not something I had really done before - not like this anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I will absolutely still continue to serve my brand photography clients with well-composed, in-focus photos but I am absolutely up for getting weird and breaking the rules. Who said straight lines = correct composition anyway??
Kate describes herself as a "spiritual mentor and intuitive healer driven by an intense desire to cut through the BS and help souls reclaim their strength and inner light." and can find her online and see how she's used her photos here:
