What to Wear for Your Brand Photoshoot: The Ultimate Outfit Guide

You've booked your shoot. You're excited. Then you open your closet, and the panic sets in.

What you wear to your brand photoshoot matters more than most people realise, and not because you need to look "perfect." It's because your outfits are part of your story. They communicate your energy, your professionalism, and the experience clients can expect when they work with you..

The good news is with a little intention, getting this right is much easier than it looks.

Start With Your Brand, Not Your Wardrobe

Before you pull anything out, ask yourself: What does my brand actually feel like?

If your brand is warm, earthy, and grounded, a sharp corporate blazer might feel off, even if it's a great piece.

If your brand is bold and editorial, a safe neutral might not do you justice.

Your outfits should feel like a natural extension of your brand identity, the same way your website, your messaging, and your photography style all work together.

When everything is aligned, your images feel cohesive and intentional rather than like a collection of random nice photos.

Think about your brand colors, too.

You don't need to wear them exactly, but choosing tones that complement your palette means your images will slot seamlessly into your website and social media without clashing.

How Many Outfits Should You Bring?

For a full day session like my Stand Out Session, four to six outfits is a great starting point, and more if you change quickly! This gives you enough variety to cover different moods, settings, and use cases without the day feeling rushed or overwhelming.

For a half-day session like my Show Up Shoot, two to three outfits work well.

The key is to think in stories, not just looks. Each outfit should enhance the scene we're creating together. A few ideas to get you thinking:

The Boss Look. A tailored blazer, quality suit, or smart casual combination. Perfect for speaking engagements, high-level networking, or simply showing the polished, professional side of your brand.

The Daily Look. How you actually show up on a client call or coffee date. Approachable, real, and completely you.

The Lifestyle Look. A great pair of jeans and a fine knit, a go-to dress with layers, or relaxed work-from-home wear. This is where your personality and relatability shine through.

The Elevated Look. Luxurious fabrics, statement jewelry, something that dials up the confidence and attracts high-caliber clients.

The Playful Look. A bold print, a fun slogan tee that aligns with your values, sequins, and a flowy dress that catches the breeze. Something that shows the joy and energy behind your brand.

The Morning Look. If your morning routine is part of your brand story, cozy loungewear or a robe can make for beautiful, authentic imagery that really connects with your audience.

Bring layers, accessories, and backup options too.

Sometimes a jacket thrown over a shoulder or a swap of shoes transforms a look entirely without needing a full outfit change.

What Colors Work Best on Camera?

Rich, mid-toned colors tend to photograph beautifully. Think deep greens, warm terracottas, burnt amber, dusty blues, and soft neutrals. These tones hold well in both natural and studio light and tend to feel timeless rather than trend-led.

A few things to be mindful of: bright whites and very pale tones can overexpose in strong light, neons and fluorescents cast unnatural tones onto your skin, and skin-toned clothing can wash you out and be tricky to edit. None of these are absolute rules, but they're worth knowing before you pack.

When in doubt, start with timeless neutrals as your base and build in personality through accessories, textures, and one or two bolder pieces.

What to Avoid Wearing for Your Brand Photoshoot

A few things that commonly cause issues on shoot day:

Busy patterns and high-contrast prints. These can pull focus away from you and distract from your message.

Logos and heavy branding. Clothing with other brands' logos dates your images quickly. If you want to feature your own logo, a custom graphic tee can work beautifully.

Too much black. Details and textures disappear, and multiple outfits can start to look the same in a gallery.

Anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you're tugging at your hem or adjusting a neckline every five

minutes, it will show. Wear things that feel good to move in, that you've tested sitting and standing in, and that genuinely make you feel like yourself.

Clothes you've never worn before. Shoot day is not the time to break in a new pair of heels or figure out if that dress sits right. Wear things you know and trust.

Try Everything On Before Shoot Day

This is one of the most overlooked parts of shoot preparation and one of the most valuable things you can do for your confidence on the day.

A week or so before your shoot, try each outfit on properly.

Move around in it. Sit down, stand up, walk across the room. Notice how it falls, where it pulls, and whether you feel good in it when you're not just standing still in front of a mirror.

If something feels off at home, it will feel off on camera too.

While you're at it, test your angles.

Play around with poses, try turning side on, lifting your chin, and shifting your weight.

You might be surprised by what you discover about what works for your body when you give yourself the space to experiment without any pressure.

One more thing worth mentioning, and it's practical rather than glamorous: think carefully about your underwear.

Visible bra straps, waistbands, and lines all show up on camera and can take time to edit out, which delays getting your gallery back.

A seamless or skin-toned option, or a thong where needed, means less time in post-production and a faster turnaround on your images.

How to Make Your Budget Work Harder

Great outfits don't have to mean a big spend. A few ways to elevate your look intentionally:

Thrift with intention. Charity shops in high-end neighborhoods can turn up luxe pieces for a fraction of the price.

Shop secondhand. Apps like Vinted are full of gems, brand-name pieces at a fraction of the cost.

Rent the look. Sites like Hurr, Hirestreet, and Rotaro offer stunning outfits without the full investment.

Keep the tags on. Buying new? Return what doesn't work after the shoot.

Expense it. Clothing used in your shoot is often deductible as a business expense. Check with your accountant to confirm.

Get styled for free. John Lewis offers complimentary styling sessions if you want expert help pulling a polished look together.

One Final Thought

Pack by outfit story (and in a way that keeps your clothes from getting wrinkled) rather than individual pieces, grouping everything for each look together, so the shoot day flows smoothly, and you can stay fully present in the moment rather than digging through bags between locations.

And above all, wear what makes you feel powerful, aligned, and completely like yourself. When you feel good, it shows in the photos.
